An earlier tip was to use control cables as used in the boating sports. So in 1992 I went to the nearest boat supply store and got a control cable and without it being installed I could feel the ease of the operation due to the better sheath of material around the cable.

Alas, Finally installed it last summer and found that the severe turn it has to make to attach to the heater diversion valve, it actually becomes difficult to operate anyways.

Perhaps I'll have enough gumption to study it later next year.
