Ok, does anyone know where the speedometer "sender" came from. The one on #77 was in bad shape and I need 2 more for the new frames. Since I have the axles and hubs all fabricated I really would prefer to get an exact match, so I don't have to go back in and refab parts.

The drive is the same as used front wheel driven speedometers on some harley motorcycle, I have actually compared mine to one installed on a bike but have not verified the ratio. There are several different ones available with different spacers wheel size ratios etc. I also had a cable made by a harley shop.

Bob Cervero submitted the following to the Repair Tips Webpage.......

A few years ago, I bought a very nice bright LED electronic speedometer from JC Whitney. I had it in my truck for a long time. It used 4 magnets wired to the driveshaft and a magnetic sensor. It was calibrated by following another car at a known speed and adjusting a knob on the back. Maybe they still offer it. The problem would be finding a place to mount the magnets on a pulse.

I found a repair manual for the 400cc Yamaha engine in my Pulse #61. The manual is for a 1976-1981 Yamaha motorcycle. It looks like the speedometer gear located down on the front wheel of my Pulse is the same one that came on a 1976-1981 Yamaha XS360 and XS400 motorcycle. This suggests you may get a replacement from a Yamaha dealer or motorcycle salvage yard. You probably will have to use the worm gear from your Litestar/Pulse to maintain the proper speed ratio. It is very easy to change.

Gentlemen,

thanks for the info. I'll head to my local Honda dealer to see if they can find a match. We also have a very big motorcycle salvage yard here in Orlando. The owner also happens to own a Pulse which is almost ready for the road. I'm trying the get some pictures of the unique frame design and motorcycle front forks that have been installed, but his welder is, for some reason, very protective of his mods. ???

Hal Lazar and I have been trying a figure out what speedometer unit was being used in the Pulse. We have 3 different ones from 3 different Pulses. Hal is presently trying one from a Husqvarna which he says looks very similar to his.

Well, I've given up on the search and am going GPS. There's a wide range of GPS units available for a wide range of applications from boats to runners, all of which display a very accurate speed. No cables, no wires (other than power and maybe an antenna), and no speed "pickup" unit on the axle.

I'm thinking power requirements may be an issue, but since they also run on batteries, I'm not going to let that stop me.

Who's our GPS enthusiasts? Is this a good alternative? If so, #77 will be sporting a digital speedometer and trip mapping system.

Hey that is a great idea. My speedo is at least 10 mph off and a piece of crap. I have learned to comensate but it would be nice to see how fast I am going as I blow past the conventional 4 wheelers ............-

Michael Boyson says.......

I used a small LED out of an old computer I took apart. I used electrical shrink wrap to attach the LED to a flexible tube and aimed it at the speedo. It works great.

The nice thing about the bicycle speedo is that it can be calibrated for any size tire.

Has anybody considered using an electronic speedometers from Autometer. They look like old style speedometers but can be programmed.

I looked at the Autometer site and they definitely have some nice products. I couldn't tell if the prices included the speed "pick up" units or just the meter/displays component. In any case, at $300 to $400, I would lean toward getting a GPS unit that has the additional capabilities of navigation and maping. Pretty much all the GPS units are "portable", so you can take it with you in any car.

I run a GPS and the only problem i see is sometimes you lose satellite reception. You would want a unit that has a large display that would be easy to read while driving we dont need any accidents.

If you are using a handheld GPS unit, have you somehow mounted it in the dash or do you just refer (in hand) to it as needed? Their prices are definately better than the Autometer gauges I refered to.

I asked the Gold Wing forum that I am on about GPS as a speedo (loads of people on GL's use GPS). Follow this thread...sounds like it may work!

Bob...I have no idea why all my posts show up as 'Guest' when I am logged in but the correct web address for the LCD speedometer is:

www.kuryakyn.com

and it is on page 95 0f their current catalog--notation is that the item is to be released 'late 2005.' (Listed Under-- Fuel Tank Accessories)
Hope that helps.

Since we are speaking of speedometers... I was out at the Performance Racing Expo and Convention last week here in Orlando. I found a standalone speedometer solution that might interest those that are needing to replace their old worn out unit and that don't want to go the GPS route.

Here's the email response I received, which includes the web site and phone contact info. At $200 + it's not inexpensive, but nor is the GPS solution.

---------------------------
Good morning and thank you for contacting SPA. Our Speedo is a universal unit. All it requires is a 12vdc supply. It gets it's readings from a hall effect magnet type sender. It comes with installation and set up instructions. This is a very easy way to get your speed, trip meter and odometer. You can go to www.spa-design.co.uk and see the manual on this and all of our gauges.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me here or at 317-271-7941.

Thank you again

Dave
